On November 3rd 2007, Park Ridge's own, Michael Collet, founder of Strong Athletes Against Steroids, won the World Bench Press Federation Championships in Tuscola IL. This is Collet's sixth world title.
Collet claims that the reason he continues to compete is to have credibility when he speaks to young athletes about the dangers of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. He currently holds the world record ( 250# )for his age and weight class. Though he won the competition with a lift of 240#, he attempted to break his own record twice in the meet, missing 255# twice.
"I will get it next year!" he told the meet director, Dr. Darrell Latch.
Collet says he has many to thank for his fifty years of competition in weight lifting- his brother who was his role model, Dr. Craig Morse of Park Ridge, and his family who encouraged him along the way.
